Okay – before I get into digging up all the Republican National Convention footage, here’s a NEWS-worthy clip from the Dem. Convention.
Background: The Dem. Platform Committee had made a number of changes, among which were two notable ones: in changing entire paragraphs, the phrases “God-given” and “Jerusalem is the capital of Israel” were removed, leaving NO mention of God left in the document, and making support of Israel increasingly shaky.
Informal media got ahold of this, and a bit of a hubbub ensued, and the DNC decided (reportedly the word came from the very top, teh Bo hisself) to change it back. So, in this 3 min. clip, you see (hispanic Los Angeles Mayor and Chairman of the Convention-) Tony Villaraigosa announcing the vote; and watch what happens next….! [… hee!]
Voice votes can be VERY subjective, sure. So that’s why the rule is that they need a 2/3 majority to carry a proposition. What, in your esteemed, subjective opinion, was the result of the vote?!?!? : )
Did you notice the Mayor seemed a bit…. flummoxed?… after the third vote…? Another source has a pic of the teleprompter telling Villaraigosa what to say. Which he grudgingly does say. Even he knows it’s bullshit.
What I have not yet read elsewhere, is this: the Dems’ mistake was in combining the two ideas into a single vote. They should have separated the two changes, and then, they probably would have gotten their majority.
But instead they got the atheists to join with the muslims, other palestinian supporters, and assorted Jew-haters to shout down the average Dem. delegate. All those super-lovey, Liberal-christians just got shafted by their adorably tolerated special interest groups.
Specific platform changes below, in case you’re interested:
This is the paragraph that was in the 2008 platform:
“We need a government that stands up for the hopes, values, and interests of working people, and gives everyone willing to work hard the chance to make the most of their God-given potential.”
Now the words “God-given” have been removed. The paragraph has been restructured to say this:
“We gather to reclaim the basic bargain that built the largest middle class and the most prosperous nation on Earth – the simple principle that in America, hard work should pay off, responsibility should be rewarded, and each one of us should be able to go as far as our talent and drive take us.”
And on Jerusalem:
… Jerusalem is and will remain the capital of Israel. …
… * crickets * …
