Genius Awards

A Middle School principal in Massachusetts has canceled the school’s Honors Night…

“The Honors Night, which can be a great sense of pride for the recipients’ families, can also be devastating to a child who has worked extremely hard in a difficult class but who, despite growth, has not been able to maintain a high grade point average,” he wrote in a letter to parents.

…because academic success can be influenced by the amount of support a student receives at home and not all students receive the same level of emotional and academic support at home.

Sooooo…. he’s decided to include the honors ceremony with a previously planned end-of-the-year assembly where exceptional students will be recognized IN FRONT OF THE ENTIRE STUDENT BODY.

This will make the losers feel better HOW?!?! With the previous arrangement, ‘runner-up’ students would know about the awards, but they could give it little attention, thus softening the blow of their loss. But Mr. Genius Principal here will now make the crowning of the Intellects a school-wide event! Hard to see where that will help the disadvantaged……
